ANDERSON

Donald Nelson Anderson, 57, died Dec. 4, 1985 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines where he had been a patient the past eight days.

He was born March 23, 1928 in Clarke County, Iowa, and was the youngest of three children born to Fred and Edna Bartlett Anderson of the Humeston area.

Following his graduation from LeRoy High School in 1946, he enrolled at the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. After his graduation, he was employed at Valley National Bank in Des Moines, later entering the United States Army. After Army duty, he returned home to farm with his parents and was then recalled to the Army serving as a corporal during the Korean Conflict.

On Aug. 8, 1953, he was married to Mary Lou Brewer of Chariton in Lordsburg, N.M., where they made their home for four years. He was employed at the Bank of Lordsburg. In 1957, he returned to Chariton. Don spent the remainder of his working years at the National Bank and Trust Company of Chariton. After 28 years at the bank he became a victim of cancer and his ill health forced his retirement on Jan. 8, 1985.

He and Mary were the parents of two children, a son, D. Eric of West Des Moines, and a daughter, Kristi Anderson of Des Moines. They survive him along with his wife, Mary, and a sister, Bette Bolling and husband Art of Silver City, N.M. An uncle, Victor Anderson of Chariton, also survives, along with several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother Harry in 1966 and his parents in 1970.

Don was involved in many community activities; serving as Jaycee treasurer; a six-year term as a trustee on the Chariton Community Hospital Board, of which he was chairman for two years; a longtime member of Chariton Community Builders, of which he was currently serving as treasurer. He was also a member of the American Legion.

Don had been involved in many activities and attended all school functions involving his son and daughter: Band Parents and Sportsbackers. Don was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed attending or watching college football and basketball games.

He was baptized in the First Baptist Church in Lordsburg in 1956, and later transferred his membership to the Chariton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Don had served as deacon in his church as well as holding the position of treasurer and Chairman of the Church Board at various times.

To those who knew him well, he will be remembered as a kind, loving and unassuming individual. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and accomplished his goals in a very quiet methodical manner.

Services were held Saturday, Dec. 7, 1985, at the Christian Church, with the Rev. Jerry Hambleton conducting. Bearers were Jim Kerns, Jim Fields, Roger Woods, Craig Downs, Howard Swainey and Si Hofmann Jr. Interment was at the Chariton Cemetery.
