Gayle Colleen Dunn, 77, of Waverly, died Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.

Gayle was born January 5, 1933, the daughter of Edmund and Helen (Hogg) Dunn in Cherokee, Iowa. She graduated from Cherokee High School in 1951 and then attended Iowa State University for three years. On February 13, 1955, she was united in marriage to Evart (Tony) Peterson in Cherokee. The couple made their homes in Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa. They later divorced. She was a homemaker and a teacher's aide at Western Dubuque High School in Epworth, Iowa for several years. Gayle went back to school to earn her Associates Degree in 1990 from Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa. She then began working as a Computer Programmer at CUNA Mutual Insurance in Waverly, Iowa until her retirement in 1999.
Gayle was an extensive traveler visiting the Carribean (Bonaire), China, Antarctica, Brazil, Peru, Chile and Hawaii. She enjoyed journalism and was an avid reader and follower of current world events. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking and bird watching. She was a longtime member of the PEO Sisterhood. In 1999 she journeyed across Iowa on R.A.G.B.R.A.I. with her son Dave. She very much enjoyed the company of her grandchildren.

She is survived by her son; Dave (Brenda Tjelta) Peterson of Saint Paul, Minnesota, daughter; Martha "Marty" Parry of Waverly, sister; Dona Kyndberg of Loveland, Colorado, brother; Mark (Patricia) Dunn of Mexico, four grandchildren; Christina and Matthew Parry and Thomas and Jillian Peterson, and her dog, Minnie. She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister Patty Sorensen.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 3, 2010, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Waverly. The family will greet friends for an hour before the service at the church. There will be no visitation, her body has been cremated. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center, McLean Hospital, 115 Mill St, Belmont, MA 02478 (brainbank.mclean.org). Gayle died of Alzheimer.
