Robert Dixon Crow was the son of tenant farmers who immigrated from Alabama to Texas when Texas was just opened up to colonization, probably by Austin the father of Stephen F. Austin. It's my understanding that his father and mother died of yellow fever and that he lived with relatives. There was quite an migration to east Texas following the war with the Cherokee Indians and many of the soldiers were given land in Alabama and Georgia. Many times the great red river raft had been blasted out and Jefferson, Texas became the "Gateway To The West". A fairly well developed road was available to San Antonio which was at that time the center of activity in Spanish Territory. This road was known as the old Spanish Trail and ran through Rusk and also south of Marshall, Texas.

1880 Census, Trinity County, TX HH 216 shows Robert D. Crow born in Texas, his father Joshua W. Crow born in Tennessee and his mother Minerva Mahan born in Tennessee. Record of funeral #3825 Pg 210 received from Gibson Funeral Home in Lufkin, Texas says his date of birth is Sept 1st age 83yrs 4mon and 12 days at the time of his death. The charge for the funeral $123.50
