Thomas M White married Marthia Olivia [Harris] White on Aug 11, 1875 in Corley Bowie Co TX.


He was the son of Benjamin & Polly [Nix] White. Grandson of Elias & Anne Gibbs White,

of Redwater Bowie Co TX, formerly of Union Co S?C, arrived Bowie Co TX 1846.


Marthia the daughter of John Calvin Harris, and Mary Jane (Molly) [Johnson] Harris,

the 1st wife of John C Harris.


After the early deaths of Thomas's parents, he was placed in his grandfather's

family, Elias White, until he was old enough to live on his own, the same

fate of his siblings, all raised by uncles/aunts... all became productive citizens.

Thomas & Marthia and children were recorded in a Bible belonging to their son Richard Rex White, he listed their Marriage date, and the Births & Deaths of his siblings, until his death in 1956, Richard's wife Illie continued recording, at some point passed the Bible to Richard's brother Leo and his wife Sally, after their deaths, was passed to their daughter Frances White Townsend, who passed it on to one of their living sons, who now care for the Bible.

ABOUT THOMAS:


Thomas was a humble and modest man, of quite disposition, content with his farming and blacksmith shop. A Christian, his whole life, he never held a man in bondage, after the civil war, he rode home, from Dallas, where his unit had surrendered, sharing a Mule Ride with a blackman, testiment to his true character, a kind and good man. At his death, he did not request a Civil War Marker, or grave, only that he be buried with his wife, Marthia.

THOMAS'S CHURCH:


Both Thomas and Marthia attended the Maud Methodist Church, with most of their children while in Maud. They are described in the churches book:


"The Maud Methodist History Book, Entire Family, Children and Spouses were all named in a book, "The History of Maud United Methodist Church 1874-1974, Written by Joe V Clouse, Pastor and P. E. Cooley. The book describes each of Thomas's children and there spouses and children, and displays the Thomas White Family Picture..." END

BOOK - MARTHA MOVED TO BOWIE CO 1868:


Maud Methodist book says Martha moved to Bowie Co 1868 at the age of Sixteen. And that Thomas and Martha were married 1875 at Corley Bowie Co TX, after there marriage attended the Maud Methodist Church, as long as they were alive.

1876 - THOMAS & MARTHIA BUY FARM:


In September 1876, Martha and Thomas M. White bought a farm about 3 miles from the present town of Maud. The farm home is still in the family. This is where nine of their ten children were born and reared. Marion Augusta was two months old when they moved to their new home. A number of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren reside in Maud at the present time. Several of them are members of the Maud United Methodist Church.

THOMAS'S CIVIL WAR SERVICE:


Thomas Monroe White was a PVT in the Civil War (CSA), served in Co. F, 19th Texas Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, in Walker's Division, Trans-Mississippi Department. They were also known as the Waterhouse Regt., and Walker's Greyhounds.


This unit engaged at Vicksburg MS, Milliken's Bend, Perkin's Landing, Bayou Teche Campaign, Red Water Campaign, Battle of Mansfield, Battle of Pleasant Hill, and Jenkins Ferry. The unit was part of an effort to prevent the Federal Army from entering East Texas, one of the successes of the Civil War, preventing the destruction and burning of Texas towns as Sherman's troops had done through out the Southern States.
