Alfred Sowers was the eldest of nine known children of Matthias ("Tice") Sowers (1805-1886) and Rebecca Spach (became Spaugh) (1807-1848), who married c1828 in an unknown location in North Carolina. After Rebecca died, Tice remarried the widow Maria Charlotte Shore Reed/Reid (went by Mary) (1821-1896) on 05 Jun 1855 at Bartholomew County, Indiana and had at least one known additional child.

Alfred married Louisa Henrietta Holder (1833-1922) on 21 Mar 1852 at Bartholomew County, Indiana. Alfred and Louisa were the parents of five known children, namely:

1. Lucinda E. Sowers Chitty (1853-1890)
2. Henry Matthias Sowers (1856-1945)
3. William Alfred Sowers (1859-1938)
4. Caroline L. Sowers Snyder Ricketts (1863-1950)
5. Emmanuel Leander Sowers (1868-1876)
