Miss Mary Davis was born in North Carolina on February 1, 1801 as a daughter of John B. & Esther (Mattocks) Davis.

She became the Bride of John D. Barber on December 30, 1818 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. John made the journey from Pulaski County, Kentucky (where he was living) back to Lincoln County to court and marry her. Shortly after their marriage, they both moved to Kentucky and began living next to his parents.

Mary bcame the Mother of 10 children. Their names were :

Charles
Nancy Jane
John James
Mary Carr

During the 1820's the Barber families moved from Kentucky to Illinois and they settled in Schuyler County.

In August of 1830 the Barbers came to McDonough County and settled on land in Chalmers Township. A House and Barn had to be buildt quickly before Winter arrived.It was a Very Cold & Long Winter with record amounts of snowfall. Provisions became low and the Barbers consisted mainly on dry hominy until Springtime arrived. After surviving their first winter in Illinois, they became better prepared for the future ones.

In 1832 the John D. Barber family moved to Colchester Township and buildt a home and settled a farm. This is where they continued to live the remainder of their lives.

This family cemetery was established in 1835 by the Barber family. This cemetery was established on family land and originally contained about an acre of ground.
