He married Magdalena (Schlitz) Schlitt April 1, 1882 in Norka Colony, Saratov, Russia, daughter of Johannes Schlitt and Magdalena Brehm. She was born April 6, 1858 in Norka Colony, Saratov, Russia, and died August 1887 in Norka Colony, Saratov, Russia.

Jacob was killed fighting in the Russian Army. After the death of his wife, Magdalena Schlitt Yost, the children were taken by her parents. Elizabeth (Lizzie) was adopted into her maternal grandparents' family; her sister Annie and brother Peter kept their surname, Yost.

He is buried in the Sutton Cemetery, Sutton, Nebraska next to son Howard.
Lizzie married (2) Bert Haskins November 1941 in Montana. He was born 1888, and died November 5, 1976 in Harlowton, Montana. Bert is buried in Moutainview Cemetery in Big Timber, Montana.
