Lydia Anne Bradford was the daughter of Milo Wellington and Louisa May (Dubay) Bradford. For years the Bradford family didn't know what actually happened to Lydia.

The truth of the story was found in a family Bible and in church records in Hemlock, MI, in 2012.

Lydia became very ill with TB with a complication of Croup. Her mother, Louisa, was pregnant at the time and the doctor would not allow Louisa to care for Lydia. Her care was left up to her papa and grandma, Marcus Harrison and Sarah Losey Bradford. Lydia died on April 2, 1897, and was buried on April 4, 1897 at St. Mary's Catholic Church cemetery, in Hemlock, MI. She is buried next to her aunt and uncle...Frank and Mary Margaret Dubay, in the plot with their son, Charlie, who was 1 yr 7 mos at the time of death.

After the birth of Frank in 1898 and a third child, Lillian May in 1899, Milo (the father) became very ill with TB and pneumonia...and died in 1901. Louisa was pregnant for her fourth child at the time.

Because of not being able to care for Lydia at the time of her death, the grandparents; Marcus and Sarah Bradford, presumed that the reason their son had died was because of the exposure to TB he received in caring for his daughter.

Blaming the expossure on the fact that Louisa could not care for Lydia at the time, it soon became Louisa's fault that their son had died, along with the fact that she was a Catholic, and they threw Louisa and her three small children out of their house. She was forced to move her small family into a chicken coup in the back yard of a neighbor.

The neighbor was Alanzo Yates, who was a Black Smith and friend of Louisa's husband, Milo. They married in 1903 and moved from Wheeler, Mi to Pelston, MI, where Louisa gave birth to a little girl, Olive Yates on March 31, 1903. Olive lived only until the next January, and passed on Jan. 19, 1904. They soon left the Pelston area, and moved to Traverse City, MI...where they raised their family, having one more son, who died shortly after birth.

Lydia Bradford was buried on April 4, 1897, in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Hemlock, MI...next to her Aunt and Uncle. (The Dubey's)
