Lafayette was the son of Elias and Maria (Clark) Bedal. He moved from Canada to Minnesota and married Clementia Fuller in Olmsted County, Minnesota in September 1869. Together they had 9 children: Eva, Leonard, Milo, George, Franklin, Frank, John, Grace and J.A. They moved to Walnut Grove, Minnesota where he became the town's first postmaster (1873 to 1879). He also taught school for a short time and owned a store. Sometime during the first week of August 1882, he was killed in a sawmill accident, leaving his wife to raise their young children. He is buried somewhere in Aitkin, Aitkin County, Minnesota.
