Bluford Dyer was born in the Pendleton District, South Carolina to Joshua Dyer (c.1755–1809) and Sarah (Stephens) Dyer (1760–1809. His parents are both buried in South Carolina.

Bluford Dyer came to Georgia in the early 1830s. He married Emily Caroline Hudson on Nov 23, 1837 in Jackson County Georgia. Emily was very young at the time of their marriage, probably 16. According to census records she was about 15 years younger than Bluford. They had nine chidren born to them, and like more people in those days, the family engaged primarily in farming in Gwinnett County, Georgia.
