Virginia was of Azorean Portuguese heritage. Her surname was Marshall which was an Americanization of the name Machado. Her siblings included Anne, Joseph, Mary, Mollie, Lizzie, Antonio, Bell and Ernie. She married an Azorean immigrant from the island of Faial, Joe Pereira Vargas and they raised 5 sons, Joseph (1917), Bill(1918), Raymond (1920), Melvin (1921) and Clifford (1924). Clifford gained some fame as the owner if Circus Vargas. They raised their boys in the Pleasanton, Santa Rita and Livermore areas. Virginia was a widow for almost 25 years. Virginia became an invalid as a result of an auto accident and lived with a caretaker at 320 Angela Street, Pleasanton in later years. A fire damaged the house at that residence but Virginia was rescued from the fire by Don Lakella, her caretaker. She died on March 22, 1981, which agrees with the California Death Index and her funeral card, posted here, however her gravestone bears the incorrect date of March 20, 1981.
