In 1885 he and his family and father are listed together on the Nebraska State Census, living in Nebraska City. He is listed in the Nebraska State Gazeteer Business Directory, 1890-91, for Otoe County, Nebraska City as: Barr, James A, wallpaper, paints, etc, 708 Central Ave. The 1900 census still shows James and Laura in Otoe County, Nebraska, and they have two children: Arthur Garfield (1880-1966) and Laura M. Recently found information shows that Laura Mae Sawyer was adopted by James A and Laura Vroman Barr in 1893. She appears to be the daughter of Phill Sawyer and Elida Vroman (Laura's sister).
