By 1860 he was married to Flora Belle Huffman and was living in Nebraska City, Otoe, Nebraska and had one daughter, Emeline. In 1870 they were still in Nebraska City with "M"(Minerva Emeline), "C" (Charlie), and "M", a female age 2/12. 1880 shows him enumerated twice, once with Flora and children, Minerva, Charlie, George, and Earl; and once with a housekeeper, Laura Vrooman. In 1883, he and Laura Vrooman marry in Otoe County, Nebraska and his parents are listed on the marriage license. In 1885 he and his family and father are listed together on the Nebraska State Census, living in Nebraska City. He is listed in the Nebraska State Gazeteer Business Directory, 1890-91, for Otoe County, Nebraska City as: Barr, James A, wallpaper, paints, etc, 708 Central Ave. The 1900 census still shows James and Laura in Otoe County, Nebraska, and they have two children: Arthur Garfield (1880-1966) and Laura M. Recently found information shows that Laura Mae Sawyer was adopted by James A and Laura Vroman Barr in 1893. She appears to be the daughter of Phill Sawyer and Elida Vroman (Laura's sister).
Around 1905 the Barrs have moved to Pasadena, Los Angeles, California, part of the "Nebraska City colony" of Pasadena. In 1910 Laura, the wife, states that she is the mother of two, with only one living. Arthur is also in Pasadena.
