John B. Murdock, at 89, of Hyannis, WWII veteran
John B. Murdock of Hyannis, a World War II veteran and former employee of Prudential Insurance Co., died Wednesday at Newport Hospital in Rhode Island. He was 89.
Born and raised in Everett, he lived in Concord and Cotuit before moving to Hyannis.
He graduated from Holy Cross College in 1941.
Mr. Murdock enlisted in the Marine Corps during his senior year of high school and was called to active duty in February 1942. He trained at Quantico, Va., and graduated from officer candidate's school at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
As a second lieutenant, Mr. Murdock transferred to the West Coast and became a member of the 2nd Division, 1st Battalion, 8th Regiment. He served in Samoa, Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Saipan as an executive officer and company commander and was then promoted to captain.
On Nov. 20, 1942, he and his patrol rescued fellow Marine Barney Ross, who later became the world welterweight champion.
After leaving the South Pacific, he served as commander of the ammunitions depot in Hingham and as an adjutant at Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington, D.C. He also served as a military aide to Gov. Maurice Tobin from 1945 to 1946.
He was awarded a Purple Heart and Presidential Citation for his service.
He worked as a home office representative for Prudential Insurance Co. for 37 years.
Mr. Murdock served as an usher at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Osterville for 35 years. He was a member of the Olde Barnstable Golf Club and Holy Cross College Alumni Association. He was an active member of the 2nd Division USMC and Marine Corps League, Hyannis Detachment 125.
Husband of the late Patricia (Staples), Mr. Murdock is survived by his companion, Barbara O'Neill of Centerville; a daughter, Pamela Stanek of Newport, R.I.; two sons, Daniel of Groton and John R. of Boston; two sisters, Charlotte Hogan of Cranford, N.J., and Catherine Dewey of Quincy; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon today at Our Lady of Assumption Church, Osterville.
Burial will be in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne
