Lead Daily Call newspaper, July 26, 1937 - "A.N. Axemaker Loses Life. Miner Is Victim of Rock Slide Just Before Midnight Saturday.
Arthur N. Axemaker, in the employ of the Homestake mining company in underground work in the past nine years, was instantly killed Saturday night by a slide of rock in South E stope of the 1250 level, which occurred just previous to midnight. Mr. Axemaker, with the other workmen, had eaten lunch and had resumed work. His two partners, Ed Wadsworth and Harry Oberling, had gone a short distance into the sub-drift for timber, and hearing the rock falling, rushed back. They were joined by Henry Lambrecht and Merle Garry who were working in S South C, adjoining stope, who also heard the slide. The alarm was given and rescuers immediately set to work to remove tons of debris which had fallen. His badly crushed body was recovered about 1:30 o'clock.
Mr. Axemaker was born February 13, 1895, in David City, Neb. He was united in marriage on November 28, 1917, to Lyda Rebensdorf, at White Lake, S.D. His widow, a son, Laurence, 2 daughters, Darlene and Lorraine, survive, as do his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Axemaker, White Lake, and six brothers, Walter, Robert, Clarence, Francis, Charles and John, living at widely scattered points.
He was a member of St. Patrick's catholic church and requiem high mass will be held in his memory on Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock, with burial in Calvary cemetery, the Rev. M.S. Roach will be celebrant of the mass and will also preach the sermon. Mrs. Ray Carroll will sing the 'Ave Maria' and David Smith will sing 'O Salutaris Hostia' and 'God of My Soul.' The pallbearers will be W.F. Ramser, Merle Garry, G.E. Jones, Joe Welsh, John Percevich and Joe Gengler.
The body will be at the Rounsevell funeral parlors until the hour of the church rites. The Catholic ladies guild will recite the rosary at the funeral parlors Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock.
Relatives coming for the funeral are Mr. and Mrs. Joe Axemaker, White Lake, parents of the deceased; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Axemaker, Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Axemaker, Harrold, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Francis Axemaker; Mr. and Mrs. John Axemaker, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Axemaker, Mrs. Elizabeth Rebensdorf, Mrs. Mary Frederickson, Mr. and Mrs. William Rebensdorf, and Mr. and Mrs. Matt Krell, all of White Lake, S.D. Mrs. Martin Schweder of Central City and Sylvester Schweder, both of CEntral, sister and nephew of Mrs. Axemaker, and their families, will also be present at the last rite."

A requiem high mass this morning at 9:30 o'clock at St. Patrick's church in this city, marked the funeral rites of the late A.N. Axemaker, his tragic death occurring last Saturday night just prior to midnight in a rockslide in the Homestake underground works. The church was filled with sorrowing friends and there was a profusion of beautiful flowers. The Rev. M.S. Roach was celebrant of the mass and preached the sermon. Mrs. Wesley Rose presided at the organ, and played the accompaniment for Mrs. Ray Carroll who sang the 'Ave Maria,' and David Smith sang 'God of my Heart.'"
The "Accident Report State of South Dakota, dated July 29, 1937, noted that the accident occurred on Sunday, July 25, 1937 at 12:30 a.m. "Fatal Accident; apparently killed instantly while going down a manway in the stope. A cave-in occurred and a rock caught him as he was starting down the ladder." The report noted that Axemaker was 41 years of age; married and had three children under the age of 16; occupation - miner in the Mine Department; length of experience 9 years; died from crushing injury to the head and chest.
