Carl was born in Pomerania (Pommern), Prussia (now in Vorpommern-Rügen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, possibly Lüdershagen, Barth, or Martenshagen on 14 Feb 1839.
He was a blacksmith in the USA.
He and his second wife and family traveled to the USA in 1892 in the steam ship "SS Braunschweig" landing at Baltimore, Maryland. They first moved to Harvard, McHenry Co., IL and were sponsored by Christoph Strandt supposedly a cousin of Caroline. Carl had four children with his first wife _____ REIBE: Caroline - 1865, Mathilda - 1872, Karl - 1873, Martha - 1874, and four children with Caroline: Bertha - 1880, August - 1881, Hedwige - 1883, and Henry - 1889.
Carl's two brothers had emigrated separately about 1870 and 1882 to Australia where the name was changed to Cross.
