Dexter was born Dec. 29, 1845, in Delaware Co., Ohio, son of a father born either in Mass. or New York, and a mother born in Ohio. He died July 23, 1924, in Barron, aged 78 years, 6 months and 24 days, and was buried there in Wayside Cemetery besides the remains of his wife Frances.

On Dec. 30, 1866, Dexter married Frances (Fannie) Chilton at Pulaski Twp., Iowa Co., Wis. Frances was born May 17, 1848, in Wis., daughter of a father born in Wis. and a mother born in Texas. She died Aug. 25, 1921, in Barron, aged 73 years, 7 months and 25 days and was buried there in Wayside Cemetery. Their one known child was Cora Belle Harris, born March 16, 1875. Cora married Everett White.

Dexter was a Civil War veteran of Company A, 33rd Wisconsin Infantry & Company F, 11th Wisconsin Infantry Regiments.

Dexter enlisted January 2, 1864, at Clyde, Pulaski Township, Iowa County, Wisconsin, to serve three years as a Private in Company A, 33rd Wisconsin Infantry. At that time he was listed as a 5'5½" tall, 18 year old farmer, with sandy hair, blue eyes and a sandy complexion from Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, and born in Delaware County, Ohio.

On July 22, 1865, Dexter was transferred to Company F of the 11th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. His records revealed that he took part in the Atlanta Expedition, the Battle of Nashville on December 15 & 16, 1864, and the Siege of Spanish Fort, Alabama, during April 1865.

On September 4, 1865, he was mustered out of Federal service with Company F at Mobile, Alabama. On the muster out roll it was noted that he was due the last $210.00 of his enlistment bounty. His pay was also stopped for the cost of one Spencer Repeating Rifle and accouterments retained.

After his discharge, Dexter returned to Avoca, Iowa County, Wisconsin, later moving to Barron, Barron County, Wisconsin.

Dexter W. Harris, veteran of the Civil War, and for many years a well known citizen of Barron, died Wednesday morning at the Barron City hospital. He has been in failing health for some time.
