Robert George Benton came to California in 1876 from McHenry County, Illinois. He was born in Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut. For a time he worked for his brother, John Eliot Benton, Postmaster of Oakland 1873-1879. John E. Benton was primarily a Congregational minister.
Robert G. Benton's brother was Joseph Augustine Benton b. 1818, a Congregational minister who arrived in San Francisco in 1849.
