Kinsley was born to Jonathan and Eunice Allen. In June 1860 Kinsley was working as a day laborer in Winnebago County, Wisconsin. He was newly married to Julia, and their first-born, Charlie, was 5 months old. In 1870 they were in Madelia, Watonwan County, Minnesota with four children, all of whom were born in Wisconsin. They were still in Watonwan County, Minnesota in 1875, 1880 and 1895, albeit now they were farming near the town of Antrim--they had three more children while living in Minnesota. Between 1900 and 1910 Kinsley and Julia moved to Middleton, Idaho, where they lived with their son Chester and his family. In January of 1920 Kinsley and Julia were living in Portland, OR at 115 E. 34th St.

Kinsley and Julia had seven children: Charles H., Libbie Belle, Chester J., Harley Hulbert, Jennie M., George Kinsley, and Judson Fay.
