LTC William Patrick Anderson CMG, FRGS

William Patrick Anderson was trained as a civil engineer.

He was Superintendent of Lighthouses for almost 40 years, and designed many of the more notable lighthouses in Canada.

He married Dorothea Susannah Small on 18 October 1876 at St. Albans Church, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Colonel William Patrick Anderson CMG FRGS (1851–1927) was the son of Thomas Anderson and Adelaide Alicia Smith. He married Dorothea Susannah Small in 1876. They had four sons and one daughter.

Three of his sons were awarded the Distinguished Service Order for actions during the Great War.

He was a Canadian civil engineer and was Superintendent of Lighthouses for almost 40 years, responsible for many of the more notable lighthouses in Canada.

Having an active interest in military matters, he joined the Canadian Militia in 1864, first serving with the Bishop's College School Caders, when he was 14 years old, seeing active service during the First and Second Fenian Raids. He went to the Northwest Terriories in 1872 and then later entered Ottawa where he joined the local Governor-General's Foot Guards as a private, eventually rose to commanding the 43rd Duke of Cornwall's Own Rifles. All through his time in the militia, he was active in competitive shooting, winning many Dominion Rifle Association competitions. He was made a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1913. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

He died in 1927 and was buried in Beechwood Cemetery, Ottawa, Ontario.

Lieutenant Colonel William Anderson veteran of the Fenian raids, was a respected member of the Canadian Civil engineering community. He was responsible for the design and installation of many lighthouses and signal stations on both coasts and Great Lakes and had been appointed Chief Engineer and General Superintendent of Lighthouses by 1891. An active member of the militia, the Colonel commanded the 43rd Regiment and represented Canada on the Bisley rifle team at the turn of the century.
