Major-General Thomas Victor Anderson was the son of Lt-Col William Patrick Anderson, CMG FRGS, and Dorothea Susanna Small. He along with two of his brothers,
Lieutenant-General William Beaumont Anderson OBE CD (1877–1959) and Lieutenant-Colonel Alexander Alderson Anderson D.S.O. (1889–1973), were awarded the Distinguished Service Order for actions in the Great War. Hugh Boulton Anderson (1885–1939) was also his brother. Thomas and his two brothers were each Distinguished Service Order for actions in the Great War. Thomas enlisted for overseas service in the Great War continuing his pre-war association with the Canadian Engineers. In 1914 he proceeded overseas as a major with the 1st Canadian Divisional Engineers. In 1915 he was at Canadian Corps Headquarters. In January 1916 he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel and Commanding Officer of 3rd Canadian Divisional Engineers. Anderson was wounded while in the front line the day before the 8 Apr 1917 beginning of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. He was awarded the Order of St Anne, 2nd Class with swords, a Russian decoration, the Distinguished Service Order, and mentioned in despatches four times.
