Viola Spikes Kitchen was an acclaimed pianist. The daughter of Monroe and Medora Spikes, she came from Texas to Los Angeles with her family in 1897. Wife of Stewart W. Kitchen, they married in Chicago in 1904. Like her brothers, John C. and Benjamin "Reb" Spikes, she was an accomplished musician. She was a graduate of Tuskegee University, and later traveled the world as a concert pianist before her life was cut short by disease at age 32.
