Emma's parents came to the United States in 1882, and were living in New York when Emma was born November 22, 1886.

Emma traveled to the Cedar Rapids, Iowa area where relatives were living. She married Otto Novotny, who was born April 14, 1867.

In March of 1919, they, along with their seven children, moved to property Otto had purchased in Como township, Hand County, South Dakota. A house was moved onto the property, while Otto constructed other buildings.

The children who made the trip from Iowa included: Hattie, born July 18, 1904; Robert, born April 6, 1908; Rose, born May 30, 1911; Caroline, born September 2, 1913; Millie, born October 2, 1915; and twins, Edward and Edith, born May 30, 1918. Born in Como twp., Hand Co., SD were Frank, born December 18, 1919, and Emma, born November 15, 1922.

Emma died of tuberculosis July 3, 1929. Otto, completely discouraged by the drought, depression and death of his wife, returned to Central City, Iowa with his children who were still at home, where he and his oldest son, Bob, purchased another farm. Sons, Edward and Frank later returned to South Dakota, with Edward later moving to Denver, CO.
