He was married twice with Emma Chudoba being his second wife. This was also her second marriage. She had daughter Hattie with first husband but she took the Novotny name.

Obituary states he was born April 14, 1867 in Bohemia coming to this country in 1886. Daughters Millie Auen, Carolyn Hansel, Hattie Bezner and Edith Dvorak; sons Robert, Edward and Frank all survived him.
