He was a truck driver for Black Rock Paving Contractors and attended Elk River Church of the Nazarene.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Commodore S. and Hester Genealia Kidd Burgess; wife, Arvella Burgess; brothers, Johnny, Corbet and Leonard Burgess; and his sister, Louise Surface.
Surviving him are son, James L. Burgess and wife Loretta of Charleston; brother, Commodore Burgess of South Charleston; grandchildren, Troy A. and James S. Burgess; five stepgrandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Doctors Young, Hood, Schirtcinger and Cortez, the nurses, and staff at CAMC Memorial MICU for the care given to Teddy.
Graveside Service and burial will be 1 p.m. Sunday, June 19, in Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney, with the Rev. Fairley McCormick officiating.
