Regardless of his birthplace, Luman was residing in Macomb County, Michigan, as a teenager.
Luman first married Mary Elizabeth Balch on 17 Oct 1867. Sadly, she died of Thyphus fever just four months later while carrying their first child. Her headstone provides a glimpse at his deep grief in losing her: "Sleep on my loved one and... [headstone broken] For the Lord hath called thee... [headstone broken]."
During his grief, Luman accepted work as a day laborer on other farms, eventually making his way to the farm of David Atwell in Attica, Lapeer County, Michigan. There, he met the lovely Mary A. Atwell... and his heart was touched once more.
On 25 Sep 1869, Luman married Mary in Attica. Together, they had six children, including two who died quite young. The four children who lived to adult age include: Henry H. Allen Sr., Joseph A.
