Obituary:
Ellen Eudora (Buckley) Menke (92) Our beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother and friend, Ellen Eudora Menke no longer suffers from the difficulties aging brings, but rather on October 5, 2010 she went to be with Jesus as her faith became her sight. Ellen was born on November 8, 1917 to Elver and Esther Buckley in St. Andrews, Washington. She was the oldest of eight children and carried much responsibility at an early age in caring for the growing family. She attended school in a one room school house with her siblings. She favored activities that required working with her hands such as gardening, canning, working in her flower beds; quilting for friends, family and the needy through the Lutheran Church quilting group. She was a skilled seamstress and not only made her own clothing but made hundreds of stuffed animals that delighted the children of Medical Lake and her own grandchildren on their birthdays and Christmas time. Ellen was a member of the Davis Lake Grange and served as the secretary for 40 years. She also belonged to the Royal Neighbors, the Lutheran Church, K.O.P.S., and was a 4-H participant and leader for many years. She not only pieced many quilts but embroidered many also. Ellen was known in the county for her baking and pie making and especially her homemade cinnamon rolls for which she was featured in the local paper and she invited many friends over for rolls and coffee and a game of pinochle. Ellen is survived by 4 siblings, sisters Emily Olsen, Evelyn Ferguson, Esther (Tess) Morton, and brother Elver (and Ilene) Buckley. Other survivors include, son Gary (and Ruby) Menke, daughter Elaine (Avery) Wilson, 3 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Ellen was preceded in death by husband Herman Menke, her parents, brother Earl Buckley, sisters Edith Payne and Eunice Zundel, and granddaughter Debra Zeigler. The family wishes to send a special thanks to Ellen's Doctor Susan Melchiorie who saw to her medical needs so compassionately these last 8 years and the staff at Loyalton allowing her the independence and safety while in assisted living, and especially Pastor Rick and the nurses at Kootenai Memorial/Circle of Life Wing who were tender and compassionate with her final wishes. There will be a Memorial Service at 1pm on Saturday October 16 at English Funeral Chapel located at 1133 N. 4th Street in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho to celebrate the life of Ellen. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Heart Association. We will not soon forget Ellen's spunk and outlook on life and we will miss her. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, WA. is in charge of arrangements.
