Betty Thurman Brogden, 78, of Decatur, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, at Brookewood Nursing Center with her family by her side.

She was a faithful member of Union Grove Baptist Church for many years. Her love for the Lord and her amazing ability to sing allowed her to minister to many through her songs. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and was loved by all who knew her. She retired from Shaw Industries, and was preceded in death by her parents, Lon and Dolly Howard Thurman; her husband of 29 years, Luther Lee Brogden Jr.; three brothers, Lige, Robert and Wesley Thurman; and three sisters, Ossie Thurman, Irene Bates and Jannie Wilson.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Don and Renee Brogden of Calhoun; two brothers and sisters-in-law, J.W. and Joey Thurman and William and Lois Thurman, all of Athens; two grandchildren and their spouses, Toby and Johnna Brogden and Tabatha and Jody McCammon; one step-grandchild, Gary Redman; four great-grandchildren, Asher Brogden and Jonathan, Patrick and Destiny McCammon; and a very special friend, Mary "Mutt" Vaughn.

Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Bowers Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Lewis and the Rev. Toby Brogden officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Short Creek Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Toby Brogden, Randy Liner, Troy Crowder, Joe Haney, Leon Crain and Kenny Hemphill. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Union Grove Baptist Church, J.W. Thurman, Junior Brown and Harold Torbett.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Bowers Funeral Home of Decatur is in charge of arrangements.
