Russell A. Smith, 96, passed peacefully away on August 15 at The Griffin House. He was a native of Tattnall County but lived most of his life in Evans County. He was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church, a member of the Ezel Lodge #335 and the Wellness Center. Being an avid hunter and fisherman, he was a member of the Evans County Wildlife Club. Mr. Smith was in the United States Navy during WWII and worked for over 50 years as a barber, owning shops in Claxton, Pompano Beach, Fla., and Orlando, Fla.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa Blocker Smith; his daughter, Anne Smith Mathes; as well as his parents, Sheppard Alexander Smith and Anne Eliza Smith of Manassas, Ga.

Surviving are his grandson, Patrick Mathes of Claxton; a sister-in-law, Jacquelyn Gay McGrady of Brooklet, Ga.; many nieces, nephews and cousins, throughout the country.

The family would like to recognize and give special thanks to all of his caregivers, as well as the staff of The Griffin House and his hospice nurses from Georgia Home Health Care.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 20, 11:00 a.m., at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Brewton Cemetery, Hagan.
