The 8th of 13 children born to Henry and Mary (Haake) Bartels, Ted spent his entire life in Saline County, Nebraska and was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church south of Tobias, of which his grandfather had been a charter member.

He was baptized on Zion as an infant, confirmed in 1916, and married Clara Endorf on April 21, 1935, also at Zion. He farmed south of Tobias.

He and Clara had three daughters and one son.

Clara preceded him in death. Surviving were his children and 7 grandchildren.
