Hulda Schwisow was the 7th of 13 children born to Chris and Minnie (Niederkleine)Schwisow, on their farm in Saline county, Nebraska south of Tobias. She was brought up in the Lutheran faith, and was baptized as an infant at Zion Lutheran and later confirmed there in 1919.

On August 31, 1924 she married Adolph Bartels at Zion. They had 4 daughters: Eileen, Lleanna, Ruth, and Shirley. She and Adolph celebrated 58 years of marriage before his passing.
