His sister married Anton Shaffer in Abilene, TX in Dec 1884.
Meanwhile Bernard had heard about an opportunity to homestead in Oregon so went up to Gilliam County, OR and obtained a homestead and other property totaling 1280 acres at Condon, Gilliam Co., OR.
On one of his several trips back to TX to visit his family he died of TB on 26 July 1900. He left Augusta and a cousin of theirs, Albert Dams as co-executors of his will.
Local newspaper articles from 1899 indicate that he had been in Abilene visiting family when he became very ill but the newspaper reports that he had recovered and returned to Condon (The Condon Globe, 6 Apr 1899).
Later he returned to Abilene and died there on 26 Jul 1900.
From "The History of Gilliam Co. Oregon" article "Bernard Guide(sic), who never married, owned ranch property and was a well-known sheep rancher in Gilliam County. When he became ill he went back to Abilene where he died.
NOTE: His cousin, Rosalie (Dams) Fredeck and her husband and family were also living in Abilene, TX at the time of his death. Rosalie's mother was Bernard's aunt. The co-executors of his Will were his sister and Rosalie's brother, Albert Dams of Oregon.
