U.S. Congressman. He attended Wesleyan University Ohio, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1859, returned to his home state and commenced to practice law in Opelousas, Louisiana. During the Civil war, he served as Captain of Company G, 2nd Louisiana Cavalry, Confederate Army. After the war, he was a member of the Louisiana State House of Representatives, in 1865. In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Representative-elect Andrew S. Herron, serving until 1885. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he served as judge for the fifth judicial district, (1887-92) and was again a member of the Louisiana State House of Representatives, (1886-88). He also served as judge of the court of appeals, third circuit of Louisiana, (1894-96) and as judge of the sixteenth judicial district, (1900-08). After leaving public office, he practiced law and lived in retirement until his death.
