Wesley R. Asbury, 89, of Spencer, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, passed away Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Whitfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Michelle Williamson officiating. Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery at Allen, Neb. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Wesley Raymond Asbury was born on April 19, 1917, in Waterbury, Neb., a son of Lee Greeley and Martha (Way) Asbury.

He married Naomi L. Winterringer on Aug. 15, 1936, in Ponca, Neb. Wesley was employed at various farms over the years, among them being the Dailey family farms. He also worked for Armour and Company for 20 years. Naomi preceded him in death on Sept. 19, 1997, in Sioux City.

Wesley was a member of Whitfield United Methodist Church. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed woodworking, sewing and cooking. Wesley was especially known for his pumpkin and squash pies.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice Kanto and her husband, Uuno of Sioux City and Margaret "Peggy" Pearson of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren, David Kanto and his wife, Sharon, Michelle Kanto, Perry Pearson, William Pearson and his wife, Heidi and Theodore Pearson and his wife, Sarah; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Asbury.

Pallbearers will be William Pearson, David Kanto, Paul Dailey, Matthew Dailey, Dean Pearson and Theodore Pearson.
