John Anslow was born on 14 March 1841 at Wickham, England. He is the son of William and Mary Ann "Anna" (Rye) Anslow.

About 1852 John migrated to the United States of America.

John volunteered to join the United States Army, in April of 1861, to fight in the Civil War. John served with Company K, 64th Regiment of the Ohio Infantry. After serving honorably, John was discharged on 10 December 1864, as a Private.

He married Harriet Shepherd, June 6, 1865 in Williams County, Ohio. Their known children are Effie Leiuada, John William, Annie Jane, Edward Elsworth, Byrd Morris, Laura May and Hazel Agnes Anslow.

At the age of sixty seven, on 9 April 1908, John passed away at Port Orchard, Washington.
