John Will Coles left Simpson, Kansas in 1895 and came to Dewey Co., Oklahoma. He homesteaded on 160 acres of land then built a dugout to live in before he went back to Kansas to get my mother and sister Effie who was two years old. It was a long way to move in a covered wagon through indian country. But there were other people along the way so they weren't always alone. Their first address was Beemont, later Cestos near Vici.

My father did freighting from Woodward to Taloga to help make a living and was caught in snowstorms sometimes so bad that his team had to bring him home and nearly froze a few times.

The old dugout plaid out and they had to dig another one. Lee was born in the second dugout in 1897. Then Papa cut logs and built a log house with a board floor in it. Fred, Ira and I were born in the log house in 1899, 1901 and 1904. Then they built a frame house and Marie was born in it in 1908.

Papa raised corn and kafir corn mostly, also mellet for hay.

There were quiet a few people for neighbors by 1903 so they built the Fairview school house, where all of us children went to school.

We were a happy bunch of kids and never felt deprived of anything. We had lots of friends and parties. We all enjoyed our Grandfather Coles. (William Burr Coles) He was always so kind with us. He told us lots of stories about his life in the Civil War.

We had a telephone as far back as I can remember. Papa bought as his 1st car, a 1914 Model T Ford. It had carbide light in front and little kerosene lights on the sides by the windshield. We had some muddy roads sometimes and had to push or walk home sometimes.

In 1916 Papa bought a thrashing machine which he operated many years. In 1918 Lee married Mabel Dearmond and lived two miles from us. In 1920 we moved to Vici and Lee and Mabel moved to the home place. Effie died in 1907 and Ira in 1915. In 1923 I married Duard Hart. In 1924 Fred married Nona Whittacker. In 1925 Marie married Art Ruth, they divorced and Marie remarried Cecil Foster of Colorado.

Mama died the 9th of April 1948 and we lost Papa on the 18th of February 1952. Fred died the 29th of September 1964. Marie on 24th of March 1965 and Lee died on the 8th of August 1967. I lost my husband on the 9th of October 1975.

I spent four years alone in my home after Duard died then I sold my home and moved to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma to be near my youngest son. I have a apartment and lots of friends and am real happy I made the move. I have nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren and they are all real nice and loving to me.
