Grandson of Albert and Lena (Nicklaus) Horste and Thomas Lambert Knight and Mary Ines Butsch
Father of Thomas M. Horste, II (Tad), Erica Therese Jones
Grandfather of Shaun, Brooke, Taryn, and Connor
He was raised in Grayville, Illinois, with brothers, Phillip and Barry. His family owned and operated the Horste Meat Market, which was well-known for its bologna, a special recipe brought directly from Germany.
Tom was a star athlete throughout his school years and excelled at basketball. He graduated from college at Murray State University in Kentucky and then moved to Manassa, Virginia in 1968 to work for the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC. He retired in 1995 from the government and returned to Illinois to settle in Effingham with his sweetheart and best friend, Linda Taylor-Perillo. Tom enjoyed history, the outdoors, and gardening, especially growing tomatoes. He loved trees and working with wood, and applied that passion and talent for carpentry by making beautiful furniture for his family. Tom built his home in Virginia, a duplex in Altamont for his mother, and his current hom on Lake Sara.
Tom was a compassionate man and forged strong frienships throughout his life. He was a loving dad and "Papa Tom" to his four grandchildren. He will be deeply missed, never forgotten and remain in our hearts forever.
