William graduated from Greensville County Training School in Emporia, VA. At an early age he became a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Jarratt, VA.

At age 15, both of his parents died in a house fire. At that time he was adopted by Giles and Lelia Jefferson, uncle and aunt of Anna Lee Watkins Darkins. He worked on the farm of the Jeffersons until he was in his twenties. While living in Sussex County, he was a member of the Chapel Hill Baptist Church in Jarratt, VA.

After graduating from Greensville County Training High School in Emporia ,VA, he married and moved to Petersburg. In Petersburg he became affiliated with First Baptist Church, Harrison Street, Petersburg, VA (the oldest Afro-American Baptist congregation in the nation..founded 1774).

His first employment was at Brown-Williamson Tobacco Co in Petersburg and later became an employee of Central State Hospital, Petersburg, VA where he retired in 1965.

William's affiliations included James A. Threatt Men's Club of First Baptist Church, A. P. Hill Happy Hour Seniors Club of Petersburg, Masons and Elks.

Funeral services for William Henry Darkins were held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 12, 1995 at the Historic First Baptist Church, Harrison Street, Petersburg, VA.
