Parents: Adolphus Watkins and Mattie Jane Jefferson Watkins of Jarratt, VA.

On August 3, 1935 Anna Lee Watkins married William Henry Darkins in Jarratt (Sussex County), Virginia.

At an early age Anna Lee was baptized and became a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Jarratt, VA. In the mid 1930s after she was married and moved to Petersburg, Virginia and became a member of First Baptist Church, Harrison Street. At this time she and her husband lived in the home Mollie Reese Loftin (her grandmother's sister). The family lived in the Loftin home until 1950.

Lee received her early education at Jefferson School which was founded by her grandmother, Martha Reese Jefferson. Although Lee did not attend college, she was a driving force in her three children's educational endeavors including their college education.

Lee's church and social club affiliation included the Maude E. Taylor Memorial Club of First Baptist Church and Annie Bell Blanche Memorial Tent No. 469.

In Lee's early years while living on Carter Street, she was employed at Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company on Perry Street in Petersburg and later at Central State Hospital where she retired in the 1967.

Lee, as she was affectionately known, was a caring neighbor and friend to people throughout her community. She was never too busy to lend a helping hand in community needs whether it was providing clothing and food for the needy or taking in people in need. She reminded her children to carry on this tradition of providing service and caring for others without pay.

Funeral services for Anna Lee Watkins Darkins were held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, March 29, 1977 at the Historic First Baptist Church, Harrison Street, Petersburg, VA.
