Adolphus Watkins parents were Nancy Hicks Watkins and Frank Watkins of Brunswick County (Totaro District), Virginia.

On 21 October 1897, he married Mattie Jane Jefferson Watkins at her father's home in Greensville County, VA. They had ten (10) children...two died at birth: Ulysses Vernon Watkins (b. 26 December 1899, d. 11 March 1968); Mary Catherine Watkins Hall (b. 27 May 1902, d. 2 August 1995); Frank Watkins (b. 1904, d. 13 October 1928); Martha H. Watkins (b. 18 September 1905, d. 23 September 1908); Adolphus C. Watkins (b. 1908; d. unknown); James Henry Watkins (b. 27 May 1910, d. 6 August 1957); Anna Lee Watkins Darkins (b. 9 July 1912, d. 25 March 1977)and Lucy Jane Watkins Lewis (b. 7 June 1914).

After Mattie died on June 23, 1916, Adolphus and the older daughter Mary Catherine were the main caretakers of the younger children. On December 26, 1917, Adolphus married Ninnie Bet Jones Blakes of Yale (Sussex County), Virginia. Adolphus and Ninnie Bet had three children, namely, Emma Inez Watkins Parker (b. 28 September 1918, d. 26 August 1973); Ethel Louise Watkins (b. 24 September 1921, d. 26 July 1992) and Julia Estelle Watkins Moore (b. 21 August 1924, d. 4 Oct 2005).

Adolphus owned property in Sussex County and lived off Lebanon Church Road behind the Lebanon Methodist Church where he served as sexton during his later years. For a number of years he was a farmer and supervisor at a saw mill.

At age 65, Adolphus died at his home in Sussex County, VA from coronary complications.
