Opera Singer. A noted soprano of 19th Century Vienna, she is primarily remembered for her operetta performances. Drawn to the theater from an early age Marie made her professional debut at Graz in 1844 with child roles; first heard at Munich in 1850 she bowed at Vienna's Theater Josefstadt in 1852 then followed with acclaimed performances at Berlin, Hamburg, and Riga. Over the years Marie earned praise in the operettas of Franz von Suppe and Jacques Offenbach, particularly in the soprano leads of the latter's "La Belle Helene", "Barbe-Bleue", and "The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein". Associated with Vienna's Theater an der Wein from 1865 on, Marie was to create the role of Rosalinde at the April 5, 1874, world premiere of Johann Strauss II's "Der Fledermaus". After making successful tours of the United States in the early 1880s Marie gave her final performance at Odenburg in 1888. There is some disagreement as to her date of birth with various sources listing years between 1828 and 1836.
