Flavius J. McCarty was the one of two children born to William and Esther (AKA Hester) Whitehead McCarty. His sister was Sarah Ann (m. Spangler Gipe) McCarty.

He served our country in the Union Army during the Civil War, enlisting in Lafayette, Tippecanoe, Indiana on Aug. 21, 1862. Flavius served as a Private in Reg. 90, Co. L, 5th Cavalry. He later served in Reg. 71, Co. D, 6th Cavalry. On Sept. 27, 1865 he was discharched with the rank of Corporal.

On June 13, 1864 he married Elizabeth Morris, daughter of Rev. Richard and Catherine Morris.They had two children; William R. and Florence. William married Della M. Osenbach. Florence was married to Oliver M. Nisley and later Simeon G. Yeager

Flavius J. McCarty, 79 years old, a pioneer resident of the county, died at 7:25 o'clock Monday morning, at the family home, 224 Fowler Avenue, West Lafayette. He suffered a stroke of paralysis a week before his death, and gradually grew weaker until the end came. Last summer he fell and fractured a hip, but during the winter he had been in fair health.

Mr. McCarty was born August 9, 1844, the son of William and Hester McCarty. His birthplace was the old McCarty homestead, east of the city, on McCarty Lane, which was bought by William Mc Carty from John Purdue.

The deceased received his early education in the old log school house near the McCarty homestead. At the age of 19, he enlisted for service in the Civil War and was assigned to the Fifth Indiana Cavalry. He was wounded in action and for three months was a prisoner in Libby prison.

Engaged in Farming

During the war he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Morris, who survives. After the war he returned to the farm of his birth, and farmed there until 1895, when he retired and moved to the present family residence in West Lafayette. Surviving are the widow, a daughter, Mrs. Simeon Yeager, and a son, W. R. McCarty, both of here, with three grandsons and one great grandson.

For many years Mr. McCarty was a member of Congress Street M. E. Church and served as one of its trustees. Later he transferred his membership to the West Lafayette M. E. Church, where he was a steward for a number of years. He was also a member of Logan Taylor Post, G. A. R.

The funeral will be held at the home, in West Lafayette, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. A. H. Kenna will have charge and G. A. R. services will be held. Miss Mabel Duryea will sing. Burial will be in Grand View Cemetery.
