Esther was seventh of eight children born to James and Sarah Wood Whitehead. Her siblings were Abigale (M. John Woodruff), Sarah (m. Aaron Shaw), Ann Whitehead, Ruth (m. James Bennett), James C. Whitehead, and Mary Jane (m. James Springer) and John Whitehead.

She married William McCarty on June 30, 1842 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. On her marriage documents she is listed as Hester.

Esther and William had two children; Flavius Josephus and Sarah Ann (m. Spangler Gipe) McCarty.
