Herbert A. Hartmann, 83, of 1616 E Austin St, died Saturday in Sioux Valley Hospital.

He was born March 21, 1904, on a farm near Valley Springs. He married Frances Polzin in 1926. The couple farmed near Granite, Iowa, and moved in 1929 to Sioux Falls, where he operated a dairy route for several years before becoming self-employed as a homebuilder. His wife died in 1937.

He married Rose Helen Fedt May 29, 1942, in Sioux Falls. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls. He retired in 1967.

Mr. Hartmann was the 1984 State and National Corn Husking Champion in the Golden Age Over 75 Class.

Survivors include his wife; three sons: Alvin, Brookings; Duane, Sioux Falls; and Larry, San Diego; a daughter, Mrs. Eugene (Alvina) Carlson, Garretson; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five brothers; Henry, Brandon; Charley, Sherman; and George, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and four sisters: Elsie Coehoorn and Emma Lamb, both of Sioux Falls, Mrs. Albert (Annie) Jaeger, Royal, Iowa; and Clara Irwin, Fresno, California.

Services will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Faith Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Larchwood Cemetery, Larchwood, Iowa.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today in George Boom Funeral Home. A prayer service will begin at 7:30 tonight in the funeral home.
