Ileta Wynell Wilson was born on an Army base at Fort Hood, Bell, Texas. She had a difficult time coming into this world since the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck 3 times. A fast-acting doctor removed it and Ileta became the 4th child born to Delmar Eugene Wilson and Oleta Rossie Tindell Wilson on 18 Feb 1950, her father's 35th birthday.

Ileta didn't remember anywhere she lived until her Mom and siblings stayed at Grandma and Grandpa Tindell's old house in Noma, Holmes, Florida, while her Dad was deployed in the Army. In May of the year she died she went back to this childhood memory of the only place she ever called home, and realized she probably only lived there perhaps 3 or 4 years out of her life. After returning from her trip, she said that everything in Noma shrank—the house, the streets, the downtown. The only place that hadn't changed much was the colored quarters, except for some government houses that were built right next to the old shacks she remembers as a child where the colored people lived.

Ileta came to know Jesus as her Lord and Savior in 1959 at age 9 in a low-income housing project in New Orleans, Louisiana. The church was really a recreation hall that was converted into a church every Sunday for anyone interested in attending. The preacher was a hellfire-and-damnation preacher, so Ileta figured she needed fire insurance. She told her Mom she wanted to accept Christ, so Mom invited the preacher from the project church to come talk to her. He said all kinds of religious stuff she didn't understand until he came to the part about asking Jesus into her heart and all her sins would be washed away like dirty bath water down the drain. She wanted to do that, so they bowed their heads and he told her to repeat what he said. She did and he left saying she was a Christian.

Well, she was still a little confused. She told Mom she really didn't understand what the preacher was saying and was she really a Christian? Mom told her she didn't have to understand everything. All she had to do was ask Jesus to forgive her for her sins and ask Him to come into her heart, and she could do it at any time and any place. So she knelt by her bed that night and did what Mom said she could do. That's when she believes she became a Christian.

Her relationship with the Living God is a lot more than fire insurance. Over her growing-up years, she was always interested in spiritual things. So she attended the local church wherever she lived, and she studied her Bible on a regular basis. Her goal in life was to live for Jesus. Ileta joined every church function available while growing up, so she naturally became a leader in a women's organization or a teacher of children in many churches she attended.

She attended schools in Florida and Louisiana before the family moved to San Jose, Santa Clara, California in 1960 when Ileta was 10. She graduated from Branham High School, Campbell, Santa Clara, California in 1969. Ileta attended junior colleges and transferred to California Baptist College (CBC) in Riverside, Riverside, California in 1971 while also attending Riverside Junior College because she wanted a nursery certificate to teach in pre-school. So while working on a 1975 B.A. in English Literature, she was also working on an A.A. in English and nursery certificate. One very long summer while attending classes at Riverside Junior College and living in the dorm at CBC, she also worked 60 hours a week at odd jobs on and off campus. That was the hardest work she had ever experienced, and she said she would never do it like that again.

Ileta met Robert Dean Wilson at CBC and married 18 May 1973. On 16 Feb 1974 Levi Daniel Wilson was born, and on 25 Sep 1976 Leah Naomi Wilson was born. Ileta was married 17 years and then divorced in Sonora, Tuolumne, California 1 Oct 1990.

Ileta had a deep love and a gift for working with and teaching young children. Her two children were her joy in life. Ileta learned many basic life lessons from her Mom. Ileta wasn't a ‘save-the whales' type of person but a ‘feed-my-family' type. She had goats, rabbits, chickens and a large garden in Sonora. She also enjoyed art painting and memorizing Scripture as well as organic gardening.

In 1990 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Following surgery, she took chemotherapy for 9 months and had a remission for 6 years. During this 6 years she had the awesome experience of working with special education severely handicapped pre-school children as a teacher's aide at Sullivan Creek Elementary, Sonora, Tuolumne, California. Also during the summer months, Ileta worked with Christian Beret Youth Camp for children with disabilities near Sonora where she was a counselor and camp activities director for a couple summers working with physically and mentally handicapped adults and children. She also spoke at a couple of fund raisers for Christian Beret because she only had good things to say about her experiences at camp. Working with special people through Calaveras County Office of Education and Christian Beret was the happiest time of Ileta's life besides raising her own two children. She hated to leave her job, so she put it off for months until her boss said it just couldn't be done anymore, and she took a medical leave of absence in 1995.

Her sisters, Maria and Betty, went with her on one final trip back to Florida in May 1996. After seeing the Pensacola and Panama City beaches, she exclaimed, "Wow is all I can say. They have got to be the prettiest place on the earth!"

So in her remaining years she fought her battle with cancer, but after 16 more months of chemotherapy, she said, "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!" She told her oncologist no more chemo, and he said she would change her mind. Well, she didn't. Instead she asked Hospice to help her die. She knew where she was headed, and she wasn't afraid. She was looking forward to seeing Jesus face-to-face as well as loved ones who went on before her. That last stay in the cancer ward at the hospital really helped her make up her mind. She said she never wanted to see the inside of a hospital again as long as she lived. And she chose to deal with the pain of cancer in the bones rather than sickness from more chemotherapy. She chose to die at home surrounded by family and the things she was familiar with. It was especially hard to leave her children and grandchild behind. She died on 15 Oct 1996 in Sonora, Tuolumne, California. Ileta had said, "I would like my ashes spilled over some pretty country field where animals may roam, flowers might grow and children may play." So her family later scattered her ashes at Christian Beret Youth Camp and over the Tuolumne River.

At Ileta's memorial service Rev. Brian Mott, pastor of Sonora Baptist Church, told about the time he came to visit the church in view of a call. After everyone was finished, he saw this young woman coming down the aisle carrying a Bible so big it would knock over a football player. Ileta told him, "I still have some more questions!" He figured he would be getting to know this lady. Another time a prayer meeting had been called and the only ones who showed up were the pastor and Ileta. The pastor was ready to cancel it when Ileta reminded him that the Bible says, "Wherever two or more are gathered in my name, there will I be in the midst of them." So they had a prayer meeting.

Ileta also told her family that she was thankful for the cancer because it brought her so much closer to God and allowed her more time to study His Word. Make sure that you have asked Jesus into your heart so that when you get to heaven and see Ileta, she will say "Can I hug your neck?"
