Indian Lake's Oldest Citizen Observes 95th Birthday.
Indian Lake – Indian Lake's oldest citizen, George Persons, celebrated his 95th birthday Sunday, Feb 17, welcoming friends and relatives with light refreshments and cheerful discussions of the events of the day.
Born at Indian Lake, Feb 17, 1857, second oldest child of B.W. and Lucy Persons, who had seven other children, Mr. Persons is at present, the only survivor of that generation. In 1880 he married Ida Fish, and four children were born to them. Mrs. Katherine Early, and Mrs. Harold Alexander with whom he now resides, Mrs. Curtiss Lull of St. Johnsville, also, and a son, Lewis, deceased. Mrs. Persons died in 1924.
He received his early education in the "old log school" house, the town's first institution of higher learning. Later, he became affiliated with the First Methodist Church and was instrumental in the development and building of the present church and parsonage.
For many years, he was active as a member of the local IOOF and the Independent Order of Foresters. Professionally (mdp) he has always been a carpenter and a cabinet maker, until the past few years when his eye sight has limited such activity. His constant reading of the daily papers has kept him alert and a keen conversationalist.
It is only during the past two or three years that Mr. Persons had not been able to raise a garden big enough to give handouts to his friends and neighbors, and even more recently he had to discontinue being the "Mr. Fixit" for the carpenter repairs in the family. In spite of this, he is always cheerful, and seldom complains of being inactivated, - only of the "fussing: that his two daughters are wont to do for him when they feel his health is not up to par for the day.
