In 1912 John married Mildred Shepard Pollock, daughter of Henry McMillan Pollock and Inez (Shepard) Pollock; Henry ran Acorn Buggy Co., an early car company in Cincinnati. In 1914 Mildred filed for divorce; there is an article about the case in the Cincinnati Enquirer. Mildred subsequently married Harvey Paul Mullane, whose family ran a candy company in Cincinnati.

John enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1916, prior to the U.S.'s entry into the war. He served during the war, being promoted to 2nd Lt., and continued in the Army until 1919, when he was honorably discharged. He then worked as an assistant purser on vessels plying between Bermuda and New York City. He was again living as a soldier on the 1930 federal census, this time in barracks at the Presidio in San Fransisco, the last record I have found for him prior to his death. He is listed as married on the 1930 census but if he married someone else after Mildred, I have yet to find a record of it.

John died at Sacramento Hospital in Sacramento, California, from a skull fracture.
