John enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1916, prior to the U.S.'s entry into the war. He served during the war, being promoted to 2nd Lt., and continued in the Army until 1919, when he was honorably discharged. He then worked as an assistant purser on vessels plying between Bermuda and New York City. He was again living as a soldier on the 1930 federal census, this time in barracks at the Presidio in San Fransisco, the last record I have found for him prior to his death. He is listed as married on the 1930 census but if he married someone else after Mildred, I have yet to find a record of it.
John died at Sacramento Hospital in Sacramento, California, from a skull fracture.
