Gertrude was born on the Boing family farm near the village of Enochsburg. Welcoming her into the world were her parents, Herman and Gertrude for whom she was named, older sister Katie and an older half-brother, John Bessler as well as her oldest half-sister, Mary Bessler.

The Boing family moved that same year into a nearby farm sold to them by Christopher Briggerman. It included a large rectangular two-storey farmhouse on about 120 acres. The Bessler family owned this property until 2011.

Gertie lived, played and went to school while living here. She was very close to her half-brother, John. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends both in Indiana and Ohio.

Gertie suffered from diabetes from childhood on. Medical help was limited in treating this disease. About the only thing that was done was to give her sips of whiskey when she started to lose consciousness.

In 1910, Gertie lost both her parents within six weeks of each other. Since her half-brother owned the farm now, she remained there with him doing what she could to help as best she could while combating her diabetes. During one of her visits with her sister, Katie, in Glendale she fell into a diabetic coma and died. Her body was returned to Enochsburg where she was buried with her parents. She was only 22 years old.
