Gertrude was born in the picturesque village of Graes by Ahaus, Westfalen, Prussia, Germany which is about a mile east the Dutch border.
When she was 28, Gertrude followed her sister, Maria Adelheid, to America arriving in Baltimore, Maryland on the Steamship Leipzig 16 Sept 1871. From there she most likely joined her sister and her husband in Millhousen, Decatur County, Indiana. She married 7 Feb 1872 to Johannes Roetger Bessler whom she may have met in Wessum since his birthplace is about a mile away from there in the village of Alstatte.

Together they had two children: Maria Adelaine Gertrude (1878-1946) born when they lived on their farm in Jeffersonville, Decatur County, Indiana. She married Anthony William Waechter (1863-1934) and had eight children. In October of that same year her parents sold the farm and moved to the town of Millhousen where they had purchased two lots in Schnieders addition.

Johannes Bessler died unexpectedly in April 1880 in Cincinnati, Ohio four months before the birth of his second child, John Conrad Bessler (1880-1950). John Conrad married Catherine Philomena "Minnie" Lecher 28 Aug 1912 in Hamburg, Indiana. They had eight children.

After Johannes died, Gertrude stayed in Millhousen with her sister and her husband until she married Herman Boing (1847-1910) 1 Feb 1883. They moved to a farm near Enochsburg, Franklin County, Indiana. where they remained until 1888. During their time there they had two daughters: Catherina (1883-1918) who married Joseph Suttman (1874-1939) on 4 Oct 1905 and had four children and Gertrude (1887-1911) who died unmarried at 22 years after falling into a diabetic coma.

In 1888, Herman bought another farm not too far away in Ray Township, Franklin County. He moved his family there and the farm remained in the Bessler family until it was sold in 2011.

Gertrude died of pneumonia on 24 Mar 1910. Her husband died a week later and their daughter, Gertie, died in Jan 1911. The three of them rest together in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Cemetery in Enochsburg.
