"He was a veteran of the War of 1812. He came to Vermilion County in 1824 and operated the old salt works. He established the first tavern. He was known as the Father of Champaign County. He was a member of the state senate in 1832 when the building of the Wabash Railroad was authorized. He was a friend of Abe Lincoln and always a good citizen."
