Born in Ampthill Bedfordshire, England in 1625. In 1644 he lead a small troup against the Dutch territory of Nieuw Amersterdam which surrendered and subsequently renamed it New York of which he was governer for the next three years. On the 28th May 1672 he was killed in battle of Solbay (Southwald) and the cannon ball which inflicted the fatal blow is now part of the memorial. He is buried at Saint Andrews Church in Ampthill Bedfordshire.
